 2nd Pair
Saffron Rainey & Carol Slater    L 4-5 6-2 0-1  W 7-5 6-4

In the first round rubbers, the first pair of Captain Gary Edwards and Speth Cumpston were able to control the hard hitting and heavy serving of their young opposition and took it comfortably in straight set 6-1, 6-2.  The new partnership of second pair Saffron Rainey and Carol Slater took a little time to get used to each other’s game and narrowly dropped the first set 4-6 but bounced back in the second set to take it 6-2.  They took an early lead in the deciding third set tiebreak but were unable to capitalise and lost it 0-1 (6-10).

In the reverse rubbers Edwards and Cumpston were totally dominant against the opposing second pair dropping only one game taking it 6-1, 6-0.  Rainey and Slater played much more consistently against the Hinstock first pair taking the first set 7-5 and after letting a 4-0 lead slip in the second set regained their focus to run out the winners 6-4.  This was a good start for their campaign with a seven points to one victory.

W 6-1 4-6 1-0   L 4-6 6-3 0-1

The second team played Criftins 2 and in the first round rubbers both were very close and went to deciding set tie breaks.  The first pair of Gary Edwards and Speth Cumpston dropped the first set 4-6, won the second set 6-2 and eventually ran out the winners 1-0.  The second pair of Saffron Rainey and Carol Slater easily won the first set 6-1 but their opponents then re-grouped and narrowly took the second set 4-6 but the Oswestry pair played the more consistent tennis in the tie break and ran out the winners 1-0 (10-6).

In the reverse rubbers Edwards and Cumpston were too good for their opponents and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 whilst Rainey and Slater were having yet another tussle against the Criftins first pair dropping the first set 4-6 but taking the second 6-3.  The deciding third set tie break ebbed to and fro with both teams edging ahead at certain stages but it was the Crifins pair who were the victors 1-0 (12-10). Winning three of the four rubbers gave another seven points to one victory for the Oswestry team.

W 6-1 6-0   W 6-1 6-2
 2nd Pair

L 6-3 4-6 0-1

The second team also travelled to Newport. In the first round rubbers Gary Edwards and Speth Cumpston got off to a quick start and soon dispatched the opposing first pair in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. With Saffron Rainey unavailable David Clough paired up with Carol Slater as second pair and they took the first set 6-3 but narrowly dropped the second set 4-6 taking the rubber to a deciding third set tie break. They soon fell behind 0-3 before fighting back to take a 7-5 lead
but a couple of double faults cost them dearly and they finally conceded 0-1 (8-10).  In the reverse rubbers Edwards and Cumpston were equally as ruthless taking it 6-1, 6-2 but the Newport first pair were too good for Clough and Slater who had no answer to the heavy top spin being dished out by their opponents but the valuable set they took in their first rubber was enough to give the Oswestry side victory by six points to two.

 2nd Pair
Saffron Rainey & Carol Slater    W 6-2 6-3 L 6-4 1-6 0-1

The second team had a home fixture against Hinstock 1.  The opening rubbers went to plan for the home side with first pair Gary Edwards partnering Speth Cumpston taking theirs in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 whilst the second pair of Saffron Rainey and Carol Slater also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

In the reverse rubbers Edwards and Cumpston cruised to victory 6-2, 6-1. Rainey and Slater took the first set 6-4 and then with a combination of making some errors and their opponents playing better they dropped the second set 1-6 to take it to a deciding third set tie break which they narrowly lost 0-1 (7-10).  This was another good victory for the Oswestry side having won all of their fixtures to date with one home and one away fixture to play

L 6-7 1-6  W 6-3 6-0

Oswestry Tennis Club’s mixed second team played an away fixture at Wollerton, in what was a top of the league clash.

In the first round rubbers Gary Edwards and partner Speth Cumpston made short work of their first pair opposition taking it in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 whilst the second pair of Saffron Rainey and Carol Slater were still playing the first set in their rubber. They had two opportunities to serve it out but dropped both to take it to a tie-break which they narrowly lost 6-7 (5-7).  After this marathon set the second set then slipped quickly away from them losing it 1-6.

In the reverse rubbers Rainey and Slater overpowered their opponents and won easily for the loss of only three games 6-3, 6-0.  However it was a different story for Edwards and Cumpston.  After taking the first set 6-1 they dropped the second set by the same score line, the first set they had lost all season, to take the rubber into a deciding third set tie break.  They soon found themselves behind 1-5 before a couple of errors by their opponents let them back in and they took this opportunity to dig deep and rescue the situation before running out the winners 1-0 (10-7).  Another seven point victory for the Oswestry side now takes them to the top of their group with one fixture remaining.
