Oswestry Men's 1 welcomed Hanmer to their Welsh Walls ground to play another top of the table clash. Conditions were perfect, a warm evening with a light breeze.

The first round of rubbers were straight forward wins for both Oswestry's pairs. Mat Grice returning to the team took a couple of games to find his rhythm as he and his partner Gary Edwards fell behind 1-4. Range and rhythm was found and the first set won 7-5. The second set they rattled off 6-2 in a well contested match.  The second pair of captain Saffron Rainey and Cieran Moran won their first rubber easily 6-2, 6-3.

The men’s first team played an away fixture at Norton-In-Hales and managed to pull off a victory on sets won taking another valuable six points.  It was a very tight call with the unfamiliar surface of grass causing the team some problems.  The first pair of Gary Edwards and Matt Grice were able to win both their rubbers with the second pair of Saffron Rainey and Ciaran Moran losing out on both their rubbers on third set deciding tie breaks but their sets won was enough to secure the team victory.

Gary Edwards & Matt Grice

W 6-4 6-4  W 6-0 6-0
 2nd Pair
Saffron Rainey & Ciaran Moran    W 6-0 6-0  W 6-4 7-5

The final match of the season was played at the Welsh Walls club versus Bomere Heath who had made their way up to second in the Babolat Sponsored Shropshire LTA Division 5N to the Oswestrians.  Bomere Heath’s first pair of Mat Jones and Neil Evans had gone undefeated all season whilst Oswestry’s first pair of Gary Edwards and Mat Grice had only dropped a single rubber over the course of seven matches.  Edwards and Grice fell behind in both sets but consistent and determined tennis saw them to a convincing win of 6-4, 6-4, which was well fought for with some extensive and skilful rallies.

On the other court Oswestry’s second pair of captain Saffron Rainey and Ciaran Moran gave a masterclass of controlled tennis.  Bomere’s Andy Challoner and Dan Butler had to wait until game four to win their first point and could not get a deuce the whole rubber.  The Oswestrians double bagelling their opponents 6-0,6-0.

The second set of rubbers mirrored the first. Mat Jones and Neil Evans gave Rainey and Moran a good game but never got ahead in games and lost 6-4, 7-5.  The Oswestrians win was built on impeccable serving from the young Moran who lost only 6 points on serve the whole rubber. On the other court Edwards and Grice gave no quarter to Bomere’s 2nd pair running out easy winners 6-0, 6-0.

So another fine 8-0 win for Oswestry that confirms them as champions of Division 5 North with an undefeated record dropping just 4 points over the eight matches.  The teams stats over the season are amongst the very best of any tennis team in the county with 60 out of a maximum 64 points scored, a game win ratio of 65% and a set win ratio of 80%. Gary Edwards tops the player stats and is one of best performing players in any of the leagues.  This team look good for next years campaign in division 4N.
